Recycling

 The schedule for the collection of RECYCLING will change beginning May 7, 2012.  Please be sure to review the Calendar of City Services to determine if your collection date will change.

 

The Delaware Solid Waste Authority  has announced they will be expanding their plastic recycling efforts. Starting immediately Delaware Residents can start recycling #1, #2, #4, #5 and #7 plastics. These numbers, known as the resin identification code, are located on the inside of an arrow-shaped triangle found at the bottom of each container.   A booklet will be provided. The City of Lewes has contracted with Inland Marine Corporation to collect Lewes' recycling. Each single-family residential property has been assigned a recycling cart by the City.  Recycling will be collected on an everyother week basis, on the day your trash in collected.  The contractor will collect one (1) additional bag of recyclables inaddition to the cart. If your cart contains unacceptable items your recycling WILL NOT be collected.  Your cart must be rolled out to the curb and/or removed from an enclosure for it to be picked up.

The following items CAN be put in your recycling cart:

 

Aluminum & Steel cans
Plastic with 1, 2, 4, 5 & 7 on the bottom
Glass Bottles or Jars
Steel or Tin Cans
Plastic Grocery Bags
Paper, such as Magazines, Junk Mail, Envelopes, Newspaper,

Corrugated Cardboard (broken down)
Boxboard, such as cereal boxes (broken down)
Colored & White Paper

 

  

 UNACCEPTABLE ITEMS:

 Napkins, Paper Towels, Waxed Cardboard, Straws, Food, Light Bulbs, Styrofoam, Utensils, Yard Waste or any Household Garbage.

 

Fortunately, being “unacceptable” does not necessarily mean that it is not recyclable; it means you cannot put it in the recycling cart.  Lots of materials are recyclable.
