George HP Smith Park Playground closes for repair

Lewes, DE –  The children’s playground in George H.P. Smith ark will be closed for repairs and maintenance from Wednesday August 3rd to August 10th to address findings from a recent safety inspection from Compliance Management International (CMI).

The playground was initially installed in 1993 with funding from a grant from the Delaware Land & Water Conservation Trust Fund and funding from the City of Lewes. Repairs and maintenance will consist of one section of the structure being removed entirely and the other section will be repaired until funding can be found to install a new playground facility.

The Lewes Parks and Recreation Commission is working on a concept design for replacement of the old playground structure.  Another feature they would like to include is a new covered picnic area within the playground area for birthday parties and children’s events. The Commission will be looking for funding through grants, donations, and fundraisers throughout the next year to support the project.  The original cost to build the playground in 1993 was around $50,000.
