CHANGES TO YARD WASTE COLLECTION effective January 1, 2014

12/04/2013

Effective January 1, 2014 Waste Industries will no longer pick up yard waste in plastic bags. This decision was made necessary as a result of a decision by DNREC’s Solid and HazardousWaste Management Section to no longer allow composting facilities to accept wastes in plastic bags.

As you probably are aware, the City’s yard waste vendor Waste Industries, transports yard waste collected in Lewes to a composting facility (Blue Hen Organics). Beginning January 1, 2014 Blue Hen will not accept plastic bags, therefore Waste Industries will no longer accept them.

All yard waste will be required to be placed in paper bags or loose in an already marked container (“Y W”). Paper bags can be purchased at local retailers such as Lowes, Home Depot, and Ace Hardware.

We apologize for the short notice and inconvenience this may cause you. Unfortunately, this change being placed on City residents is a result of outside regulatory and operational changes.

Thank You
