Motorist Safety

Your responsibility as a motorist:

Delaware State Law requires a three foot safety margin when motorists pass cyclists.

  • STOP for any pedestrian within a crosswalk.
  • Never pass a vehicle stopped to allow a pedestrian to cross the roadway.
  • Use extra caution near a school, hospital, senior hosing, central business district, or residential area.
  • STOP for any person using a cane or a guide dog, any obviously confused or incapacitated person or any child regardless of signs, signals, or markings.
  • Look carefully for traffic before leaving your vehicle. Don't become a pedestrian casualty.
  • Don't park on any sidewalks. You must not block or park in a crosswalk.
  • Always park with the right wheels against the curb. DOES NOT APPLY ON ONE-WAY STREETS)
  • Observe posted speed limits. This will give you time to slow or stop for pedestrians.
  • Drive defensively at all times.
