Police Department

Message from the chief

Welcome to the Lewes Police Department website. As your Chief of Police, I am extremely proud of the men and women who do their best every day to professionally police our community in a caring and respectful manner. Currently, our department is staffed with 13 State Certified sworn police officers, 1 civilian Administrative Assistant, 6 Parking Enforcement Officers and 10 Lifeguards.

We are a full-service law enforcement agency committed to a high quality of life for our citizens, businesses and visitors. Within the Department, there are several units such as the Patrol Division, Criminal Investigations, Bicycle and Beach Patrol and a Canine Unit. Community partnerships are of the utmost importance to us and a key ingredient to maintaining the tradition and quality we expect for all those who love and enjoy Lewes.

Thomas Spell, Chief of Police

Mission Statement

The responsibility for peace, good order, and the observance of laws rests with the citizens in Lewes as it does in any community of citizens in a democratic society. The role of the Lewes Police Department is to supplement and aid community efforts, not supplant them. Only if the proper balance between the responsibilities of the community and the responsibilities of the police is maintained can a safe and orderly society be preserved with the least burden on individual rights and freedom.
